Artist Statement

Hand pressed tiles, wheel thrown pottery and the combination of painting on ceramics have become the vehicles to express my work. Designing and making this work provides me the opportunity to create architectural surroundings and contribute to the landscape of interior spaces.

There is a dichotomy between the fired ceramic surface and the impermanence of nature that I enjoy bringing together. The natural world is a vast place that calls for my attention. A whole hillside full of sagebrush and a ripe berry bush inspire me as they affirm life in its bounty and impermanence. In my artistic process I can simplify what I see, purposefully reducing it in order to bring out its essence.

Making pots and tiles by hand are timeless acts that span cultures and time periods. My desire is to create pieces that encourage time spent enjoying and reflecting on the pleasures of life.
